What steps are required to use the machine to maintain the dental handpiece?

Automatic handpiece maintenance:

Step 1. Preparation, disconnect the coxo dental handpiece from the dental unit and then remove the bur.

Step 2. External cleaning of handpiece under running water using a long handled brush as per PCT guidelines – DO NOT IMMERSE. Alternatively, use an automatic washer disinfector as per manufacturer’s guidelines.

Step 3. Always select the correct adaptor for handpieces used, ‘o’ rings must be in place on the adaptor.

Step 4. Sterilise in autoclave, if bag is used you must follow the GDC guidelines and use a dental autoclave. (Distilled water should be used and recommended temperatures not exceeded).

Step 5.  On completion of cycle remove from chamber as soon as possible and store with head upright to drain, dry and cool. (Handpiece stands are available).  Once dry and cool the handpieces can be stored in a bag or stand with heads raised ready for use. Instruments should ideally be stored upright to allow excess lubricant to drain during storage period.  Run briefly before use to clear excess lubricant.
